Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is an attuned, evidence-based therapy that relies on a professional to utilise a specific sequence of hand movements to stimulate areas of the brain that will activate a previously ‘blocked’ healing process. The cause of this blockage is usually one or several major traumas. As a result, EMDR has become a prominent treatment for PTSD, especially as it typically requires less reliving of a traumatic event than in comparison with other talking therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). For all these reasons, the team at Bridges Therapy Centre are proud to offer EMDR in our Canary Wharf and Hendon clinics.

The History of EMDR
In 1987, Francine Shapiro was walking through the local park when she realised the intensity of her negative emotions had dissipated. She understood that it was the movement of the tree, and her eyes, that had reduced the impact of unpleasant memories. Over several years she would begin to study and mimic this effect, finally developing the widely used therapy of EMDR as we understand it today.
