Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is based in empirical science and yet has a major focus on living in the present, acceptance, and developing / accessing a transcendent sense of self. The goal of ACT is to focus on living a rich and meaningful life as an individual, accepting and regardless of the pain that comes with it. As a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy, it uses a mixture of metaphor, paradoxes, and mindfulness techniques, as well as values-guided behavioural interventions. ACT is a therapy available in our Hendon, Muswell Hill, Cambridge, Harley Street and Canary Wharf centres.

ACT is useful for those experiencing:

  • Long term illness
  • Grief
  • Relationship issues
  • Stress
  • PTSD

This list offers only a few examples of the conditions treated with ACT, and you shouldn’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team to find out more.

The History of ACT

ACT, as a form of CBT, is included in the ‘third-wave’ of behavioural therapies, which have a focus on the development of mindfulness skills. These skills are divided into the four groups of acceptance, cognitive defusion, contact with the present moment, and the observing self. The development of ACT in 1982 is attributed to Steven C. Hayes as an extension of his Rational Frame Theory. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy has since become a widely respected, and increasingly popular therapy.
