Public Speaking Phobia Therapy

Fear of public speaking, also known as glossophobia, is a common and often distressing phobia that can affect both personal and professional life. Whether it prevents you from giving presentations, speaking up in meetings, or attending social events, the right support can help you regain confidence and communicate effectively. At Bridges Therapy Centre, we offer glossophobia therapy online and in London, combining evidence-based psychological approaches with innovative treatments to help you manage and overcome public speaking anxiety.

Within a supportive, non-judgemental environment, our therapists are here to help you explore your fears, understand the causes of your anxiety, and develop practical tools to face speaking situations with confidence.

What Causes Fear of Public Speaking?

Glossophobia can develop from several factors, including past negative experiences, perfectionism, social anxiety, or fear of judgment. Symptoms often include:

  • Rapid heartbeat, sweating, or shaking before or during speaking
  • Nausea, dry mouth, or difficulty breathing
  • Avoidance of presentations, meetings, or public events
  • Intense worry or panic at the thought of speaking in front of others

Our fear of public speaking therapy is personalised to your experiences, addressing both emotional and physical responses so you can gradually build confidence.

VR Public Speaking Therapy

Here at Bridges, we offer VR public speaking therapy, an innovative and highly effective approach for managing glossophobia. Using virtual reality headsets, we simulate speaking scenarios, such as presentations, meetings, or larger audiences, in a safe and controlled environment.

Guided by one of our experienced therapists, VR therapy allows you to gradually face public speaking challenges, manage anxious thoughts, and build confidence before confronting real-life situations. Find out more about this approach on our dedicated Virtual Reality Therapy page.

How Glossophobia Therapy Works

At Bridges, our public speaking phobia therapy combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with VR exposure, to address both the mental and behavioural aspects of public speaking anxiety. During sessions, clients are gradually exposed to speaking situations through immersive VR simulations, allowing them to face challenging scenarios in a controlled and safe environment. Our therapists work with clients to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, while also teaching practical breathing and grounding techniques to manage physical anxiety.

Over time, clients develop coping strategies that can be applied in real-world speaking situations, helping to reduce avoidance, build confidence, and improve overall comfort when speaking in front of others.
